Unwritten Law - Unwritten Law (1998)

The Moment:

Cailin.

To this day, I'm not entirely sure why there is a DJ scratch section of the song, but hey, the '90s, right?

The Memory:

Shit, I'm surprised it took the fine folk here at Coffee Otis so long to get to this one. I don't like to give my brother credit for anything, but he absolutely introduced me to this band when I was in Grade 4 or 5.

Cailin was genuinely a foundational musical memory. I just fucking loved it. A guy wrote a song about his daughter, and nine-year-old me loved it so much I wanted to call my own daughter Cailin if I ever had one.

Spoiler alert — had one, did not.

Wanted everyone to hear the song so much I burnt it onto a CD to take to my Grade 6 end-of-primary school party.

I was dancing with a girl when it came on and she had the fucking nerve to call the song boring.

I said fine and ditched her arse and went to the trampoline.

You missed out Cassandra.
